Dolls 2

Here are 2 more C'upik style dolls from the Chevak region of Alaska. These are by Rosalie Panyuk. One of course is a breastfeeding mom. The other is a hunter...notice his waterproof overcoat made from sealgut! Vamantaknits asked about the faces. The faces are sewn leather (seal or caribou skin). Noses may be pinched and stitched or actually sewn on with small patches, teeth and eyes are made with tiny beads.

oooh, more dolls! Thanks, Lisa, for the info on the heads. Couldn't tell if they were fabric or leather. Now another, are the bodies wired? Do you bend the arms & legs to pose them or are they fixed in position? Are the bodies stuffed of some native material (like a grass or wood chips) or something manmade like polyester?

It occurs to me that there is a website I can check out for these details no doubt, rather than bug you. Duh!

You reminded me of all the time I worked at Alaska Auction. I'd forgotten all about oosiks! (eeek!)
